The feed got
a volume knob
10 July 2026 · Social
For fifteen years the feed was a slot machine. You fed it content and prayed. Now the audience has a dial. They can turn you up, turn you down, or mute your whole category. Reach you cannot game. You have to be chosen.
Something quiet just changed about how attention works, and most brands have not noticed yet.
For most of social media's life, the algorithm was a black box that happened to you. It decided what you saw. You had nudges at best. A "not interested" tap here, an unfollow there. The machine held the wheel. Brands played the same game from the other side. Post, hope, chase the signals, feed the box, pray it pushes you out to strangers.
That deal is ending. The audience is being handed the controls.
01What actually shipped
In December 2025 Instagram launched a feature called Your Algorithm. It lets people add or remove interests, dial specific topics up or down, and reset their recommendations to zero when the feed goes stale. It started on Reels. Through 2026 it crept across the whole app, into Explore, into the main feed.
Then on 27 June, Instagram head Adam Mosseri showed what comes next. Pull down on your feed and the tuning menu appears. Swipe up from a Reel and you can steer it. Buttons under every Reel to say more like this, less like this. His words: "We want to evolve Your Algorithm from a setting to something that feels central to your experience on Instagram."
TikTok has been building the same thing. Its Manage Topics tool gives you a slider for sport, food, travel, comedy and more, so you can turn a category down without leaving the app. In 2025 it added Smart Keyword Filters that quietly block content around words you never want to see. And you can reset the whole For You feed in two taps. Threads is adding its own controls. The pattern is everywhere at once.
02The feed became a streaming service
Here is the shift in one line. The feed used to be a TV channel. Now it is a streaming service.
A channel decides for you. You watch what is on. A streaming service waits for you to choose, learns from the choice, and hands you a remote. That is what user controlled algorithms turn the feed into. Not a river you are dropped into, a library you tune. People stop being passengers and start being programmers of their own attention.
The top comment on Mosseri's announcement said it plainly, in all caps: "WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW." That is not a feature request. That is a whole generation telling the platforms they are done being fed and want to start choosing.
03Why this should scare lazy marketers
Think about what "turn a topic down" means when you are the topic.
For years the growth hack was volume and gaming. Post constantly. Ride trending audio. Bait the metrics. Interrupt enough people and some of them convert. The whole model assumed the audience could not opt out of your category. Now they can. One slider and your entire discipline goes dark for that person. One filter and your keywords never reach them again.
Reach you bought or gamed was always rented. This makes the rent due. When people can mute a category, the brands that survive are the ones a person would deliberately turn back up. Not tolerate. Choose. That is a completely different bar, and most content on the internet does not clear it.
The interruption era assumed attention was something you take. The dial says attention is something you are given, and it can be taken back.
04What we'd make instead
Earn the turn up. Ask one brutal question of every post before it goes out. Would a real person, holding the dial, choose to see more of this on purpose. If the honest answer is no, it does not go out. Make less. Make it worth choosing.
Stop making content for the algorithm and start making it for the person holding the remote. The machine is no longer your only gatekeeper. The human is. Speak to them, not to the ranking signals. It is a lower tech idea than any growth hack and it will outlast all of them.
And treat a follow, a "more like this", a saved post as the real currency, because that is now literally what tunes you into someone's world. Vanity reach is over. Chosen attention is the whole game. The brands who get this will feel like something you invited in. The rest will feel like the thing you finally turned down.
Attention you have to earn is the only kind we have ever made. When "would you choose this" becomes the whole test, that is our job. Start something loud, or see how we think about social and branding.
