Britain stopped
clicking
8 July 2026 · Web
Most people still build a website like it is 2012. A homepage, a bit of SEO, and a quiet prayer that Google sends someone in. Awkward truth for 2026. In Britain, seven in ten searches now end without a single click.
New data from Rand Fishkin and Similarweb measured what actually happens after a Google search across six countries. The United Kingdom topped a table nobody wants to win. 69.5% of UK Google searches end with zero clicks, higher than the US, higher than Germany, higher than anyone they tested. Out of every thousand searches here, only 232 now reach the open web. The rest never leave Google.
01The front door moved
Your homepage used to be where the journey started. Someone had a question, they searched, they landed on you. That path is quietly closing. In 2024, 60% of US searches ended without a click. In early 2026 it is 68%. Ten years ago it was 45%. The line only goes one way, and right now it is moving faster than at any point in a decade.
The reason is sitting at the top of the results page. AI Overviews, the answer Google writes for you before you scroll. They already appear on more than one in five searches. When one shows up, clicks to websites fall by almost 60%. The question gets answered on the spot. Nobody knocks on your door.
02The numbers are brutal
Pew Research followed 900 real people through a full month of searching. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a result 8% of the time. Without one, 15%. The summary roughly halves your chance of a visit. Click a link inside the summary itself? 1%. One in a hundred. And 26% of those searches ended the browsing session right there. Answer delivered, browser closed.
Ahrefs tracks traffic to more than 75,000 sites run by professional marketers, people whose entire job is winning this game. Google's traffic to them dropped about 22% in a single year. If the pros are down a fifth, the average business page is in free fall.
03So is SEO dead? No. It just stopped paying rent
Here is the bit almost everyone gets wrong. They read "traffic is collapsing" and either panic or bury their head. Both are mistakes. Your ranking matters more than ever. It just does a different job now.
Ranking used to earn you a visit. Now it earns you a mention. AI Overviews are stitched together from the pages that rank highest. Get cited and you shape the answer millions of people read, even when not one of them clicks. You are still in the room. You are just not getting the footfall. Which means pumping out more blog posts to chase more clicks is running up a down escalator. The machine reads your page, keeps the answer, and sends the reader nowhere.
04What we'd build instead
Build a brand people type in on purpose. Branded search, the people who look up "Dub Media" rather than "creative agency near me", still clicks, still converts, still lands on you. That is the traffic that survived the cull. It comes from being known, not from being found.
Then build a site that earns its keep without the crowd. Fewer, sharper pages that make Google's answer better and make the handful who do arrive feel something real. And put your best work where your audience already is, the feed, the newsletter, the podcast, the room, so you never again depend on a search box that stopped opening the door.
The open web did not die. People just stopped passing through the turnstile. So build something worth the special trip.
Your website should still be the sharpest thing you own, zero-click world or not. That is our job. Start something loud, or see how we think about web and branding.
