AI made everyone
a filmmaker
6 July 2026 · Film
Type a sentence, get a film. That is roughly where 2026 landed. The tools went free, the skill floor dropped to zero, and suddenly everybody makes video. So why is good film worth more now, not less?
Here is the number that matters. 63% of video marketers say they have used AI tools to make or edit their video this year. A year ago that was 51%. In twelve months the majority flipped. Sora, Veo, Runway, Kling. The names change monthly. The direction does not.
When a whole industry gets a new superpower at the same time, the superpower stops being an advantage. It becomes the floor. And the floor is now very, very crowded.
01The floodgates opened
Making a watchable clip used to take a camera, a crew, a grade and a week. Now it takes a prompt and ninety seconds. That is genuinely brilliant. It means a small brand can test ten ideas before lunch. It means the boring stuff, the cutdowns, the versioning, the placeholder, gets done in the time it takes to make coffee.
But everyone got the same superpower on the same morning. Your competitor is generating too. So is their competitor. The feed is filling with technically fine, emotionally flat video that all rhymes because it all came out of the same few models trained on the same internet.
Cheap to make is not the same as worth watching. It never was.
02Trust is the thing you can lose in a second
People can smell it. 89% of consumers say the quality of a video directly shapes how much they trust the brand behind it. Not the polish. The trust. One cheap, uncanny, soulless clip and the viewer quietly decides you cut corners everywhere else too.
That is the trap with free generation. The cost of making a bad video dropped to nothing, so brands make more of them, and every flat one chips away at the exact thing video is supposed to build. You are not saving money. You are spending trust.
And people still want the good stuff. 84% of consumers say they want to see more video from brands. 63% say a short video is their number one way to understand a product, miles ahead of text on 12%. The appetite is enormous. The tolerance for filler is gone.
03What AI still cannot fake
Taste. Timing. The reason a cut lands one frame later than you expect and makes your chest tighten. A model can generate a face. It cannot decide which face, holding which look, at which second, tells your story. That decision is the whole job.
AI is a brilliant camera operator and a hopeless director. It will give you a thousand options and no point of view. Craft is the point of view. It is knowing what to leave out, what to hold on, what a brand should never say out loud. That is not a prompt. That is judgement, and judgement is still human.
The smartest teams already worked this out. They use AI for the grunt work and spend the time they save on the ten seconds that actually carry the idea.
04What we'd tell you
Use the tools. All of them. Generate your rough cuts, your variants, your throwaways, and move fast. Then take the hours you just got back and pour them into the one film that has to be undeniable. Give it a point of view a machine could never guess.
When everyone can make a film, the film that feels made by someone wins. AI made everyone a filmmaker. It did not make everyone worth watching.
Want film that a machine could never generate? That is the whole point of us. Start something loud, or see how we think about production and photography.
